Gynecomastia

The goal of the treatment for gynecomastia in men is to reduce the size of their breasts, which – among other things – has an adverse psychological impact.

The available surgical methods include liposuction or removal of excess mammary gland or a combination of both. In the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon, treatment of gynecomastia will produce a safe result and full correction of the problem.

When to consider treatment for gynecomastia

  • If you are reluctant to remove your shirt in public, swim, participate in sports or work out in the gym.
  • If you want to improve your overall body proportions.
  • If you are experiencing psychological distress associated with gynecomastia.
  • If you want to boost your self-confidence.

During the clinical examination, we will discuss all the advantages as well as any potential disadvantages openly and in detail.

After surgery, you will feel comfortable to reveal the contour of your breast, with or without clothing, and you will be able to enjoy permanent results.

How to know if your gynecomastia requires surgical treatment

Gynecomastia is not usually caused by a serious medical condition. In fact, its causes are rarely determined. However, because there are some medical conditions that cause gynecomastia, the first step is to review your family medical history to rule out any such possibility.

The following are some of the most common reasons why you might want to consider surgical treatment of gynecomastia:

  • You are unhappy with the size or the appearance of your breasts.
  • You feel discomfort because of your breasts.
  • Your skin retains its elasticity. The successful gynecomastia surgery involves sufficient contraction of the skin. Your skin may lack elasticity if you are fifty or over, if it has been severely altered by the sun, if you have many stretch marks, or if you have undergone gastric bypass.
  • You have already tried healthy eating and exercising to reduce the size of your breasts without achieving any results.
  • You are not overweight. Although surgery will help this patient population, the results will not be completely satisfying. For this reason, you should try to have almost the ideal body weight before surgery.
  • If you use marijuana, steroids or engage in excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks (there is the theory that these substances can cause gynecomastia).

How the surgical treatment of gynecomastia is performed

The objective of gynecomastia surgery is to restore the male breast contour and correct any deformities in the breast, the nipple or the areola.

Surgical options include liposuction, resection (surgical removal of tissue) or a combination of both approaches. The mammary gland is generally denser than fat tissue and the method of liposuction is considered unsuitable.

The incision is made in the areola of the nipple, and in cases of particularly loose skin, a firmer breast is achieved with a circular incision around the areola.

The patient leaves the hospital wearing a special bandage and the stitches are removed in about 10-14 days.

The good news for men is that, almost four months after the surgery, the scars are practically invisible, carefully hidden in the natural folds of the skin.
